TAHLEQUAH, OK - Sequoyah High School recently announced the top ten graduating seniors for the class of 2003.

They are Candice Carey, Lisa Chouteau, Whitney Warrior, Eric Marshall, Yanasa Charcoal, Jonathan Crittenden, Mac Farris, Drew Donelson, Ashley Teehee, and Katreena Foreman.
"Over the last three years I kept saying, this group is really special,” said Tony Pivec, SHS superintendent. “They've achieved academically, socially, athletically, and as leaders of this school."
Carey, 17, of Hulbert, is the Valedictorian of the 2003 class. She is the daughter of Jimmy and Anita Carey. She also serves as president of the National Honor Society and a member of student council.
Chouteau, 17, of Wichita, Kansas, is the Salutatorian of the 2003 class. She is the daughter of Cathy King. She is currently the president of the SHS chapter of the American Indian Science and Engineering Society (A.I.S.E.S.) and secretary of the senior class.
Warrior, 18, of Bunch is the daughter of Marlene and Lucian Warrior. She is the president of the student council and active in volleyball, softball, and basketball.
Marshall, 17, of Stilwell is the son of David and Ervina Marshall. He is a member of the Cherokee choir, speech and debate, and academic teams, as well as, vice-president of A.I.S.E.S.
Charcoal, 17, of Vian is the daughter of Quahlahtah Charcoal. She is the president of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and the Art Club secretary.
Donelson, of Gore, is the son of Randy and Janet Donelson. He completed requirements for graduation in December of 2002.
Farris, 18, of Tahlequah is the son of John and Brenda Farris. He was a Boys State delegate in 2002 and the Muskogee Phoenix Kicker of the Year. He is active in both football and baseball.
Teehee, 17, of Stilwell is the daughter of Albert and Barbara Teehee. She is a member of the National Honor Society, student council, choir and the academic team.
Foreman, 18, of Locust Grove is the daughter of Sonny and Sandra Foreman. She is a member of the Spanish Club and the Cherokee choir and a winner of the National Mathematics Achievement Award.
"In ten years, SHS will be smiling with pride about the accomplishments this group will have achieved," Pivec said.
Sequoyah High School’s graduation ceremony will be held on May 16, at 6:30 p.m. at Thompson Field.

Sequoyah High School, an Indian boarding school, originated in 1871, when the Cherokee National Council passed an act setting up an orphan asylum to take care of many orphans that came out of the Civil War. Sequoyah High School's approximate 300 enrollment represents 42 tribes and 14 different states. Students are eligible to attend if they are members of federally recognized Indian tribes or one-fourth blood descendants of such members. |
