CLAREMORE, OKLAHOMA - The Cherokee Nation recently acquired a building in Claremore. The Claremore Federal Building was considered excess by the federal government and was no longer used for federal government purposes."Were looking forward to having a greater presence in the Claremore area," said Cherokee Nation Principal Chief Chad Smith.
"The Claremore Federal Building is an excellent site for future Cherokee Nation facilities in Rogers County," said Cara Cowan, Cherokee Nation Tribal Council member. "The building will help make Cherokee Nation more visible outside of Tahlequah."
The building was previously leased to government agencies as office space before being declared a surplus property. The Cherokee Nation inquired about obtaining the building last spring and recently received notification that the federal government had approved their request.
The 8821 square foot building was built in 1935 and is eligible for register on the National Register of Historic Places. It’s located at 118 S. Missouri Street in Claremore.
"The Cherokee Nation is very interested in preserving the historical value of this building and what it means to the people of Claremore," Smith said.
"I hope the Cherokee Nation can fully utilize the space for our citizen's needs while preserving the historic building," Cowan added.
