Tahlequah, OK - The Seventh Annual Cherokee Homecoming Art Show and Sale opened Saturday and will run through December 31 at the Cherokee Heritage Center. A total of $5,000 was awarded in prize money. Cherokee Casino and the Oklahoma Arts Council sponsor the art show. The winner of the "Grand Award" was Jane Osti with her pottery entitled "Bird Spirit". The "Grand Award" is given to the artist that represents the best of show. The winner receives $800. The other winners in each category were awarded $300 each. Winners were as follows: Visual Arts - "Redman" by Richard Rowlodge; "Snake Dancers" by David Scott; "Life on Silver Spring" by Virginia Stroud; "One" by Sam Watts-Kidd; and "From the Soul" by Sam Watts-Kidd. Basketry - "Touch of the Creator" by Lena Blackbird and "Watchful Eyes of Salu" by Bessie Russell. Beadwork, Jewelry, and Metal-smithing - "Traditional Cherokee Belt" by Martha Berry and "Seven Clans Vessel" by Demos Glass. Pottery - "Cherokee Friendship Circle" by Jane Osti. Textiles - "Jo-la" by Margaret Flanagan and "Hunting Jacket" by Tonia Hogner-Weavel. Traditional Arts - "Come and Eat," a bowl and spoon set by Chad Johnson and "Damascus Hawk," a tomahawk by Ray Kirk.

Visual Arts Honorable Mentions went to - "And the Word became Flesh" by William Douglas Bryant; "Cherokee Myths and Legends - The Great Escape" by Connie Jenkins; "Mind of a Wolf" by Dino Kingfisher; "Warriors" by Richard Rowlodge; "Within the Generations" by Sam Watts-Kidd; and "Untitled" by Brian Waytula. Pottery Honorable Mentions went to "Keeper of the Black Drink" by Crystal Hanna; "Fluted Bottle" by Anna Mitchell; and "Honoring the Ancestors" by Jane Osti. Basketry Honorable Mentions went to "Footsteps of Our Ancestors" by Bessie Russell. Jewelry, Beadwork, Metal-smithing Honorable Mentions went to "Flying Eagle" by Wanna Lou Barton; "Cherokee Women" by Sarah Manis; and "Miniature River Cane Basket Medicine Bag" by Sandra Pallie. Textiles Honorable Mentions went to "Rail Fence Quilt" by Connie L. Donelson. Traditional Arts Honorable Mention went to "Eagle Flute with Matching Flute Case" by Darrell Bolin. The Cherokee Homecoming Art Show will hang through December 31, however, the Cherokee Heritage Center will allow Christmas shoppers the opportunity to remove their purchases in mid-December.
