TAHLEQUAH, OK - The Cherokee Nation has extended the deadline for schools interested in participating in a $1 million grant to fund programs that promote the prevention of diabetes. The Cherokee Nation will now accept grant applications through Monday, April 15.The Cherokee Nation will distribute $1 million to schools to develop and enhance physical activity programs that promote the prevention of diabetes. Eligible applicants include school systems within the 14-county jurisdictional area of the Cherokee Nation. Schools must demonstrate significant community involvement and cooperation. Priority will be given to those school districts that have a high percentage of Native American students as demonstrated by information for Year 2000 obtained from the State of Oklahoma Office of Accountability.
The proposal must address an increase in physical activity as it relates to diabetes prevention. Each school making application must demonstrate tax-exempt status with the application.
