TAHLEQUAH, OK - Tahlequah residents are invited to do some spring-cleaning on Saturday, April 6. The Cherokee Nation, City of Tahlequah, and the Tahlequah Public Works Authority are sponsoring the Second Annual Tahlequah Pollutant Collection Event at NSU Gable Field from 9:00 am to 2:00 p.m."The purpose of this hazardous waste management project is to promote safe disposal of hazardous waste in our community", said Randall Gee, environmental specialist with the Cherokee Nation.
The collection event is free to area residents. All household hazardous waste products must be from Tahlequah city households or other residential customers of Tahlequah Public Works. Residents need to show a current utility bill from the Tahlequah Public Works Authority for admittance.
Commercial and agriculture waste will not be accepted. Pollutants that are accepted are: paints, motor oil, antifreeze, brake fluids, pesticides, weed killers, yard-care products, poisons, all types of batteries, household cleaners, drain openers, gasoline, solvents, thinners, mercury, fluorescent bulbs and glues. A swap table will also be available for residents to trade good paint and other household chemicals. All products not swapped, will be recycled or disposed of in an environmentally friendly matter.
Discarded tires will also be accepted from residents in Cherokee county courtesy of the City of Tahlequah and Frontier Recycling. Each household may drop off up to ten tires free of charge. No large implement tires or tires on rims will be accepted. All tires will be recycled here in Oklahoma.
