TAHLEQUAH, OK - The Cherokee Nation will distribute $1 million to schools to develop and enhance physical activity programs that promote the prevention of diabetes.

"Diabetes is at near-epidemic levels in many Cherokee communities", said Chad Smith, Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation. “We want to teach our kids how to live a healthy lifestyle at an early age. By working together with local schools, we hope to increase the fitness level of our children."

"Medical research continues to cite a healthy diet and regular exercise as one of the most effective ways to prevent diabetes and its complications", said Chris Walker, executive director of health for Cherokee Nation.

The Cherokee Nation will distribute the money to 10-15 schools within the Cherokee Nation's 14-county jurisdictional area. Eligible applicants include school systems that demonstrate significant community involvement and cooperation. Priority will be given to those school districts that have a high percentage of Native American students as demonstrated by information for Year 2000 obtained from the State of Oklahoma Office of Accountability.

The proposal must address an increase in physical activity as it relates to diabetes prevention. Each school making application must demonstrate tax-exempt status with the application.

Application deadline is set for April 1, 2002. For application and further information, please contact Teresa Chaudoin, diabetes coordinator for the Cherokee Nation, phone: 918-456-0671(ext. 2473).
