Tahlequah, OK - Rehearsals are underway for the acclaimed Trail of Tears Drama opening June 22 at the Cherokee Heritage Center. This years cast of 90 includes Barbara McAlister and Gene McFall. "We are excited about Barbara McAlister, an internationally recognized mezzo soprano and Cherokee tribal member joining our cast," said Patrick Whelan, drama producer.
Gene McFall will play the role of Will Rogers as he has done in 43 states since 1982. In the Trail of Tears drama, Rogers will tell the story of his ancestors in an attempt to enlighten the audience of Cherokee history. McFall played Will Rogers from ages 27 to 55 in Oklahoma Educational Television's highly acclaimed centennial mini-series, "Oklahoma Passage." The dancers, singers, principles and villagers spend countless hours and seven days per week rehearsing with director Nick Sweet.
The Trail of Tears Drama will be presented at the Tsa-La-Gi Amphitheater. Recognized as one of America's most beautiful outdoor theatre venues, each of the 1,800 seats provides an excellent view of the stage area. The theater's unique design lends itself to natural acoustics and a misting system is in place.
Last year thousands of people visited the family-friendly Tsa-La-Gi Amphitheater to see the Trail of Tears Drama. In fact, the American Bus Association named it one of the Top 100 Events in North America in 2002.
"The Trail of Tears Drama offers excellent entertainment value to both tour groups and individual travelers from around the world," said the ABA. The Trail of Tears Drama will run through Labor Day Weekend, Thurs. - Sat. at 8 p.m. Ticket prices are $15 for adults, $7.50 for children and students.
