TAHLEQUAH, OK - Fiddle players of all ages are invited to participate in the 50th Cherokee National Holiday Fiddler's Contest that will be held August 31, 2002.The fiddler's contest will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Cherokee Nation Courthouse square in downtown Tahlequah. Registration will be from 12 to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, August 31. Entry fee is $10. Competition categories are senior (55 and over), open (18 and over), and novice (17 and under) divisions.
The Cherokee Nation will award cash prizes of $200 for first place, $150 for second place, and $100 for third place along with jackets to the winners in each category. .

The Cherokee Nation celebrates the Cherokee National Holiday every year over Labor Day weekend. The theme of this year's celebration is "Building One Fire." This is the 50th anniversary of the Cherokee National Holiday, which is expected to bring more than 80,000 visitors and Cherokees to Tahlequah. The annual holiday commemorates the signing of the Cherokee Nation Constitution of Sept. 6, 1839.
