TAHLEQUAH, OK - Robin McCoy received a gift of appreciation during a recent Cherokee Nation Early Childhood Unit (ECU) Head Start Policy Council Meeting. Senator Ben Robinson, on behalf of the ECU, presented the gift. Robinson also serves as a Head Start Policy Council Representative. McCoy received the gift after handing in her resignation as a policy council member. McCoy took an employee position with the Early Childhood Unit on June 3, 2002.McCoy has been a Head Start parent for more than five years and has served as a policy council member for three years. Beginning in 1999, she has volunteered more than 116 hours per month in the Head Start and Early Head Start classrooms.
"I like volunteering my time when it comes to children," said McCoy. "Although it's hard work and it keeps me very busy along with all my other tasks-going to school, working on other credentials--I still have time to go to my daughters' ball games."
Previously, McCoy worked for the Bureau of Indian Affairs from 1993 to 1999 in the Office of Trust Funds Management until she decided to attend college. She is currently a sophomore at Northeastern State University majoring in social work. She is also working to receive her Child Development Associate (CDA) Credential. To receive a CDA Credential, competent care givers and home visitors have to demonstrate their ability to meet the needs of children and parents on a daily basis.
McCoy lives in Tahlequah with her four daughters, Morningdawn, 14, Amichia, 11, Craig and Autumn, 5 and Jordan, 4.
