Tahlequah, OK - Alumni of the Cherokee Clemente Course will enjoy a hog fry Monday, July 29 at the Cherokee Heritage Center. Three semesters of students and teachers from the Cherokee Clemente Course will reunite to enjoy a traditional meal. Several students have attended all three semesters. Students range in age and Cherokee language proficiency and come from a number of communities. The eclectic mixture makes for interesting discussions and cultural exchanges.
In the summer of 2001, the Clemente class began at the Cherokee Heritage Center. The course is made possible in part by a grant form the Oklahoma Humanities Council and the National Endowment for the Humanities. The college level course transforms each semester and covers many aspects of Cherokee history, culture, government, literature and language. The Cherokee Clement Course invests time and energy into students who, in return, dedicate themselves to learning and maintaining Cherokee humanities.
Monday, July 29 is the last class for the summer session, which began May 27. The Cherokee Clemente Course 2002 fall term will begin Monday, September 9 and run Monday nights from 6 to 8 p.m. through November 11.
