TAHLEQUAH, OK - Sequoyah High School students’ ACT scores have improved thanks to ACT preparation services offered at the school.

"We've committed to giving our students every opportunity to succeed", said Tony Pivec, Superintendent at Sequoyah. “Not only will we pay for the cost of the test, but this fall, we dedicated two staff members to ACT Math review after school and continued using the services of Chad Cargill Consulting for an intense review of ACT testing tips and strategies. It appears both strategies have been very effective."

Test scores have proved that the ACT preparation has been effective. Sequoyah students who took the ACT exam on October 27th and again on December 8th raised their average ACT score by nearly one full point. Sequoyah High School ACT scores have improved by an average of 4 points since 1996.

"Last year, with the help of the teachers, we completely redesigned our curriculum using Oklahoma's PASS objectives and ACT Test standards for guidance", said Gina Stanley, curriculum director for SHS. "With these new objectives and strong teacher commitment, we are seeing positive results. As we get further into the school and cover more objectives, we anticipate further increases."

"One of our goals this year was to increase our average ACT score, so it's encouraging to see the improvement", said Kim Livingston, Gifted and Talented Coordinator at Sequoyah High School.

Sequoyah High School, an Indian boarding school, originated in 1871, when the Cherokee National Council passed an act setting up an orphan asylum to take care of many orphans that came out of the Civil War.

Sequoyah High School's approximate 300 enrollment represents 42 tribes and 14 different states. Students are eligible to attend if they are members of federally recognized Indian tribes or one-fourth blood descendants of such members.
