"The Cherokee Nation was so good to me, they gave me grants to put me through school for nursing", said Mathis, who later became a certified public health nurse.
Mathis currently splits her time as the school nurse at Sequoyah High School and as the manager of the Public Health Nurses at W.W. Hastings Indian Hospital.
"I wouldn't work for anyone else", said Mathis.
"We are very honored to have had Martha work for us over the past 30 years. It is very clear that she is dedicated to improving the health of Cherokee people as demonstrated through her commitment. She has touched many lives", said Gloria Teague Medical Director.
Mathis is originally from the Porter area and has one child. In her spare time, she enjoys clogging, snow skiing, climbing and hiking.
