“We are just thrilled to be getting a new building,” said Myra Robertson, vice-president of the Marble City Community Organization. “It’s been about a year in progress, we’ve made it this far and we are just thrilled.”
The new Marble City community building will be used as a nutrition center for the elderly, a literacy center for the youth and to hold cultural classes for community members.
“It’s going to be a multi-purpose community building,” Robertson said. “We have big plans for it.”
Cherokee Nation Principal Chief Chad Smith spoke to the crowd, as they gathered around a bonfire, about the Cherokee Nation’s view on communities and the role they play in the revitalization of the Cherokee Nation.
“I applaud the efforts of this community,” Smith said. “This is a good start and I’m looking forward to the completion of this building.”
The Cherokee Nation, as part of a community self-help project, provided funding for the building materials. Community residents will provide the labor to construct the building.
“We are thankful to the Cherokee Nation for making this possible,” said Stanley Cottrell, president of the Marble City Community Organization. “We were very interested in this project because it was a self-help project and the community has to help themselves.”
