TAHLEQUAH, OK - The 50th Cherokee National Holiday activities have expanded to include a car show, swap meet, and cruise on Saturday, August 31 on the east grounds of the Cherokee Nation complex, located 3 miles south of Tahlequah on Hwy. 62.
The 50th annual Cherokee National Holiday is expected to bring more than 80,000 visitors and Cherokees to Tahlequah, Oklahoma - August 30 through September 1, 2002 (Labor Day weekend). ![]()
"This is the first year the car show will be held since 1997", said Justin Godwin, car show coordinator. "We are adding a swap meet the morning of the car show and that night there will be a cruise in downtown Tahlequah.
Registration for the car show is 8 a.m. to noon and the judging begins at 12:30 p.m. There is a $15 entry fee and the first 100 entries will receive a dash plaque. 1st and 2nd place trophies will be presented for each class. There are 22 category classes and special prizes will be given in 8 categories. There will be drawings for door prizes throughout the day.
The swap meet set-up is scheduled 8 a.m. till noon and will be held on the east grounds of the tribal complex. The cruise is scheduled for 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday night and will be held in downtown Tahlequah. Cruise line-up will be at the Cherokee Nation Industries parking lot located at the corner of Choctaw and Water street at 6:30 p.m.
"Organizers expect more than 80,000 people to attend the 50th Cherokee National Holiday", Godwin said. "We’re hoping that the car show activities will bring added enjoyment to the number of activities already offered."
The Cherokee Nation celebrates the Cherokee National Holiday every year over Labor Day weekend. The theme of this year’s celebration is 'Building One Fire'. The annual Holiday commemorates the signing of the Cherokee Nation Constitution of September 6, 1839.
