TAHLEQUAH, OK - The Cherokee Nation is loaning air conditioners to tribal members with medical conditions that require refrigerated air. The air conditioner loan program has been in existence for more than ten years."Oklahoma summers can get pretty hot", said Jerry Snell, director of family assistance for the Cherokee Nation. "Each summer we loan window units to tribal members that have a medical condition that requires refrigerated air and who can’t afford to buy an air conditioner. We see it as a way to prevent their health from deteriorating and improve their quality of life during the summer months."
According to Margaret Manchell, family advocate in Delaware County, providing air conditioners is one of the things she enjoys most about her job. "It's a good feeling when you bring an air conditioner to someone who is elderly or handicapped and has heart problems, diabetes, or some other medical problem. I walk into their home and most of the time it’s hot and they’re sitting in the dark, trying to stay cool. Their face lights up and their whole demeanor changes. Everyone is so thankful and happy when we leave. It makes me feel good to know that we can make a difference in their life."
The air conditioners are 1200 BTU window units. To be eligible to participate in the program, you must have a letter from your doctor stating the medical condition that requires refrigerated air and meet the federal income guidelines for the Cherokee Nation's winter heating program, LIHEAP.
