Tahlequah, OK - Alumni of the Cherokee Clemente Course enjoyed a hog fry Monday, July 29 at the Cherokee Heritage Center. Three semesters of students and teachers from the Cherokee Clemente Course reunited to enjoy a favorite Cherokee meal. Harry Oosahwee and Janie Wagnon attended all three semesters of the course and received special recognition. Students also received Certificates of Completion recognizing their accomplishments.
The Clemente class hosted at the Cherokee Heritage Center is made possible in part by a grant from the Oklahoma Humanities Council and the National Endowment for the Humanities. The interest in the course has grown tremendously. Nearly 40 people were on the waiting list for the summer 2002 session. Community members are excited to take the class and discuss Cherokee related issues, past and present. Students often relate family stories and personal experiences which contribute to the familial atmosphere of the class.
