TAHLEQUAH, OK - The Cherokee Nation celebrated the "Week of the Young Child" April 8-12.

On April 8, children at Cherokee Nation's Early Childhood Unit's Head Start, Early Head Start and Child Development Centers displayed their artwork on the wall of the large hallway in the Cherokee Nation Tribal Complex.

Tuesday, April 9, the children hosted a "To Go" breakfast for their parents. They fixed a sack breakfast for their parents to take with them after dropping them off at the centers.

Cherokee Nation vocational-educational students and Northeastern State University students sponsored outside activities Wednesday for the children in the James Danielson Children's Village. The children received a snack, played with bubbles, did hand painting and other fun activities.

The youngsters participated in a parade Thursday morning. The theme for the parade was "Hugs for our Bugs." The children dressed up as butterflies, inch-worms, and bees. The Tahlequah High School Honor Guard led the parade

Friday, to conclude the "Week of the Young Child," the children met and learned about community people, firefighters and policemen.

The "Week of the Young Child" is an annual event held each April and is sponsored by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC).

The purpose of the Week of the Young Child is to focus public attention on the needs of young children and their families and to support the early childhood programs and services that meet those needs.
