TAHLEQUAH, OK - The Cherokee Nation hosted a child car seat giveaway earlier this month and will have another one in mid-October.Through the program, sponsored by the Cherokee County Chapter of Safe Kids, 47 area families have received car seats in the last two months. The seats, which are donated by the Oklahoma Department of Transportation, are given to people within the communities who show a need for such an item on a first come first served basis. Qualifications are based on W.I.C. guidelines and level of need.
The group plans to give away 30 more car seats at their next event scheduled for October 11 from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Cherokee Nation E.M.S, according to Regina Christie-Bell, employee of the Cherokee Nation and Chairperson of the Safe Kids Coalition.
"If you are interested in a free car seat, you should bring your child, the car you drive, and your W.I.C. card to the Cherokee Nation EMS building October 11,” Christie-Bell said. “Be prepared to be there for an hour, in which to attend a class on car seat safety, view a video, and learn how to properly insert the car seat."
