TAHLEQUAH, OK - The Cherokee Heritage Center announced the winners of the 2001 Cherokee Homecoming Art Show during the Master Craftsmen Honoring Dinner. The winner of the Grand Award is Dorothy Sullivan for her painting, "Gifts of our Ancestors".

Dorothy's art is inspired by pride in her Cherokee history, culture and legends. She was selected as the Honored One and Master Artist of the Red Earth Festival 1999. Her painting "But This is My Home" was the poster for the 1999 Trail of Tears Art Show at the Cherokee National Museum.
Dorothy has received many art awards including Best of Wildlife and Best of Heritage. "Fire Hawk," her drawing on bark, was named Best of Show at the 1999 Five Civilized Tribes Museum Show. Her one-woman shows include the Red Earth Museum in Oklahoma; The Museum of the Cherokee Indian and the Cherokee Heritage Museum in North Carolina; and the Bureau of Indian Affairs in Washington, D.C. The winners in the Basketry division include 1st place Lena Blackbird; 2nd place Bessie Russell; and 3rd place Marie Proctor. In the Jewelry, Metalsmithing, and Beadwork division, Martha Berry won 1st place, 2nd place was also won by Martha Berry, and 3rd place Abraham Locust, Jr. In the photography division Sammy Still won 1st place, 2nd place Tiffany Diane Still, and Sammy Still also won 3rd place. In the Visual Arts division, which included Painting, Sculpture, and Graphics, Mary America Lynn Meredith won 1st place, 2nd place Harry Oosahwee, and 3rd place Dan Horsechief.
In the Pottery division, Crystal Hanna won 1st place, 2nd place Jane Osti, and 3rd place P.J. Gilliam Stewart. In the Textile division, Shirlene Proctor won 1st place, 2nd place, Cathy Moomaw, and 3rd place Dorothy Ice. In the Traditional Arts category, Richard Shade won 1st place, 2nd place Darrell W. Bolin, and 3rd place Danny McCarter.
The Cherokee Homecoming Art Show is being sponsored by Bank of America and the Oklahoma Arts Council. The show and sale will continue through the end of December.
