TAHLEQUAH, OK - The Cherokee Nation Election Commission has set a tentative date for a special election based on a referendum petition submitted by Cherokee Nation citizens. The petition called for Cherokee citizens to approve or disapprove Legislative Act 28-99, which increased compensation for Cherokee Nation Tribal Council members.

The Election Commission set February 16, 2002 as the date for the referendum vote. The commission also set December 14 as the deadline for:

  • Inactive voters to become active voters

  • Voters to make changes on voting districts and precincts

  • The close of voter registration for this election

Changing addresses for registered voters. Voters who live along rural routes need to make sure that the Cherokee Nation Election Commission has their current 911 address before December 14, 2001.

In addition, all Cherokee citizens must be at least 18 years of age by December 14 to be eligible to register to vote.

According to Cherokee Nation law, deadlines for elections "may be changed and specially set by the Election Commission."
