TAHLEQUAH, OK - The Housing Authority of the Cherokee Nation (HACN) in partnership with the Cherokee Nation Cultural Resource Center and Talking Leaves Job Corp, invite all area youth and families to a free Drug Free Concert and Dance this Saturday, November 24, 2001. The concert and dance will be held at the Talking Leaves Job Corp gym from 1:00 p.m. to midnight.The Drug Free Concert and Dance will feature Brian Frejo and the Culture Shock Camp, the Pumpkin Hollow Band, and Xavier. This live entertainment music will encompass hip-hop, country, and rock. A drug free presentation will also be featured.
Brian Frejo began "Created 4 Greatness" to encourage youth to overcome obstacles, achieve their goals, be responsible, live a positive and healthy lifestyle and reach their full potential by finding success and physical, mental and spiritual balance. Frejo is an actor, DJ and motivational speaker. He has appeared in "Geronimo", "Last of the Mohicans", "Under Siege", and "Murder She Wrote".
The "Culture Shock Camp" is a hip-hop group consisting of a group of MC’s, DJ’s, break dancers and Graf artists. Originating out of Oklahoma City, the group has performed all over the country for the past four years. The group promotes a message of positivity, cultural diversity, overcoming obstacles and healthy choices. The "Culture Shock Camp" was featured in The Source Magazine (NYC), Daily Oklahoman, Oklahoma Indian Times and several other tribal newspapers.
The Pumpkin Hollow Band originates from the local Pumpkin Hollow Community. They play a wide range of music from country and gospel to blues and rock. The Pumpkin Hollow Band has been featured at many local schools and festivals including the Cherokee National Holiday and the Stilwell Strawberry Festival. They have won many awards and talent shows such as the Arrowhead Mall Talent Contest and the Oklahoma Production Company Talent Contest.
Xavier is also an Oklahoma based band, playing in many local schools and events. They have a sound reminiscent of Bon-Jovi, Van Halen, and Journey, which makes for an interesting, unique style and sound.
