OMAHA, NEBRASKA - The Nebraska Indian Education Association (NeIEA) recently elected Dean "Chuno" Flechs as its new president. Flechs, an enrolled member of the Cherokee Nation, currently works as the associate director of the Office of Student Equity & Multicultural Affairs at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. He holds bachelors and masters degrees from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) and has worked in college admissions/recruiting at UNL, Bacone College in Oklahoma, and Southwest Missouri State University.

Most recently, Flechs was an administrative fellow at Harvard University in Massachusetts, working with the Native American Program. He was the first Native American in Nebraska to be named a Fulbright Scholar. In 1979-80, he studied overseas at the Universität Regensburg in Germany. He is also a Vietnam-era veteran, having served in the U.S. Army. Flechs' goals for NeIEA this year include building a strong membership base, increasing educator and public awareness of Native American issues and concerns, and to increase the number of Native students entering and completing higher education. His parents are W. Dean Flechs of Langley, OK and the late Betty Davis Flechs.
