TAHLEQUAH, OK - The Housing Authority of the Cherokee Nation (HACN) held its monthly Board of Commissioner’s meeting on Tuesday, February 20, 2001. A resolution was passed to allow a one-time utility allowance for the elderly. The HACN Board voted unanimously to allocate $156,900 to assist tribal members with high utility costs. The one time utility allowance is for elderly participants 62 years of age and over, who are residing in a HACN homeownership, rental, or rental assistance housing unit. This utility allowance will assist 523 families.
"The HACN is striving to assist elderly Cherokee tribal members with the rising cost of natural gas and propane," stated Ron Qualls, Executive Director.
According to Qualls, families on fixed incomes are struggling to make ends meet because of the extreme winter temperatures and the high cost of gas.
The Board also discussed the possibility of applying for low income tax credits to finance the conversion of single-family apartments at Cherokee Heights in Pryor to homeownership units.
The Housing Authority of the Cherokee Nation Board of Commissioners Meeting is open to the public. The next meeting will be at 5:30 p.m., on Tuesday, March 20, at the HACN Administration Conference Room, located at 1500 Hensley Drive, Tahlequah.
