JAY, OK - The Cherokee Nation and the State of Oklahoma will work together to build a 40-unit apartment complex for both the non-Indian and Native American elderly in Jay.The Housing Authority of the Cherokee Nation (HACN) received official notification from the Oklahoma Housing Finance Agency of an allocation of tax credits for the Jay Senior Housing Limited Partnership, an entity formed by the Housing Authority of the Cherokee Nation to apply for alternative financing.
"These tax credits will allow us to bring $1,875,000 of private monies into this $3 million development", said Ron Qualls, HACN executive director. "This is a great example of a private/public partnership for housing."
"This is the first time in Oklahoma that an Indian Tribe has accessed this program, and I commend our Housing Authority for their concern and work for our elderly Cherokees,” said Chad Smith, Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation.
These units are open to the public. Rents will range from $275-$300 per unit. All units will be handicapped equipped. Eligible applicants must meet income guidelines and be 62 or older.
"I am thrilled we are able to bring such a project to Jay and Delaware County", said Barbara Starr-Scott, a Cherokee Nation Tribal Council member. "This is a prime example of what can be achieved when the Nation and local officials work together."
"I'm so excited about this project", said Melvina Shotpouch, a Cherokee Nation Tribal Member. “Providing services for the elderly has been one of my priorities and this project will have a major impact for all of the citizens of Jay and Delaware County."
According to Qualls, the rents can subsidized through Section 8 and the rents for all elderly Cherokees will be assisted through the HACN’s Rental Assistance Program.
The ground breaking is tentatively scheduled for mid-fall with the completed project set for the summer of 2002.
