TULSA, OK - A local Cherokee organization sponsored an elder's fellowship in Tulsa, drawing more than 20 attendees. The meeting, sponsored by the Tulsa Cherokee Community Organization (TCCO) was geared toward American Indians over the age of 55.

TCCO plans to host monthly events and invite speakers and presenters to come from different areas of the Cherokee Nation. "This time is was health, next time it might me community development or culture", said Owen Scott, chairman of TCCO. "It all depends on what the organization’s members want plus we are going to hold fellowships at different churches."

Several health professionals from the Cherokee Nation's clinic in Nowata and the Claremore Indian Hospital were on hand to take blood pressure and screen participants' blood sugar levels.

"Its good to see friends, you haven't seen in awhile and to meet new ones", said Jeannie England-Edwards, a participant in the fellowship. The fellowship also featured a covered dish luncheon and door prizes supplied by the Deputy Chief of the Cherokee Nation, Hastings Shade.

"It was just a good day, with good food and good people", said Rosie Scott, a participant in the fellowship.

TCCO holds a Cherokee class every Thursday night at the Tulsa Indian United Methodist Church. For more information concerning the elder's fellowship, or TCCO, call Dewey Alberty, phone: 918-249-1164.
