CHEROKEE, NC - The ceremonial grounds of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indian are going to be renovated. The plans include an amphitheater that will replace grandstands, which are deteriorating, after so many years of use. The EBIC is also planing to rebuild the entrance and has replaced the temporary food booths with permanent stands. The ceremonial grounds are located next to the Eastern Band’s Council House, on U.S. 441,

The EBCI Ceremonial Grounds, are where the pow-wows, fall festivals and other annual get-togethers are held. Principal Chief Leon Jones said, speaking once the renovations are complete, "Our ceremonial grounds mean an awful lot to us, will serve the people well. We’ll be able to enjoy it a lot more."

One million in grant money, from the Economic Development Administration, five hundred thousand, from a community block grant, and one hundred and twenty five thousand, from tribal funds will cover the costs. Archaeological work is under way at the site so, tribal leaders of the Eastern Band are not certain when construction will begin.

According to Brandon Stephens, EBIC's grant writer, the renovations will also include handicap access, as well as, correct some safety problems. "The current grandstand is more than 60 years old," Stephens said. "The mortar in the rock is deteriorating. There is a number of things, we just needed to provide more services."

The new amphitheater will seat 2,018. The seating area and stage area will both be covered. EBCI tribal leaders hope the amphitheater will help tourism. The town is dependant on tourism and to be able to offer more outdoor entertainment, without weather concerns will also attract additional events.
