TAHLEQUAH, OK - The Housing Authority of the Cherokee Nation, Oklahoma, (HACN) announced the opening of housing units for low-income home ownership opportunities. Thirty units are located at the Sam Ed Bush Heights in Sallisaw and 20 at the Norwood Addition in Wagoner.

The units are currently rented to low-income families through HACN’s Direct Housing program. One of HACN’s goals is to provide home ownership; therefore, rental units are being converted to home ownership units. The units are single and detached making them prime home ownership opportunities.

"This provides home ownership opportunities to our Cherokee families," stated Ron Qualls, Executive Director of the Housing Authority.

Residents of these units were issued Rental Assistance Program (RAP) coupons. These coupons will allow the residents to continue to receive housing assistance from the HACN.

Coupons can be used throughout the Cherokee Nation jurisdictional area. The HACN will also assist residents with relocation costs.

Current Cherokee residents have the opportunity to continue living in their unit and participate in the home ownership Program. To be eligible, residents must be Cherokee, have lived in the unit for one year, and qualify based on the home ownership Program guidelines.

According to Qualls, each unit will be completely refurbished with new carpet, mini blinds, interior and exterior paint, and chain link fencing.

"Families will be given choices on carpet and exterior paint color," Qualls said.
