TAHLEQUAH, OK - The Cherokee Nation is now accepting applications for Ga Du Gi Awards, which are handed out quarterly during the Tribal Council meeting. The Cherokee Nation has established the Ga Du Gi Award to honor individuals, families, or groups who put the Cherokee people first by engaging in an act or actions, which protect, preserve, and promote the well being and legacy of the Cherokee People. The Ga Du Gi Award recognizes those who ensure the social and cultural vitality of the Cherokee People, our communities, and our Nation. The award is intended to celebrate the drive of those who significantly contribute to others by exemplifying the Cherokee way of life.

In October, the Cherokee Nation honored Howard Chandler Walkingstick with the Ga Du Gi award for a lifetime of service to Indian people.

"The nominees can be young or old", said Diana Mouse, coordinator of Cherokee FIRST, the Cherokee Nation program that takes the applications for the award. "Nominees can be individuals, families or groups that give of themselves for the cause of the Cherokee people and inspire others to follow their example."

Nomination applications and letters of support must be received by email, mail, fax or hand delivery before 5:00 p.m. on the last business day of each quarter for consideration for the next quarter’s awards.
