TAHLEQUAH, OK - The Cherokee Nation is currently accepting applications for the Low Income Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). The Cherokee Nation Family Assistance department provides emergency heating assistance to eligible applicants that live within the jurisdictional boundaries of the Cherokee Nation and do not have income that exceeds the national poverty income guidelines.

For the first time, the Cherokee Nation Tribal Membership card, or the blue card, is required when making application. The head of household must be of Indian descent. Applications will be accepted in all Cherokee Nation Human Services Offices December 3, 2001 through December 31, 2001.

The Cherokee Nation will offer further assistance through LIHEAP in January with the start of the Crisis Assistance program. A crisis must be energy related and could result in the family losing means of heating their home (i.e. utility cut-off, out of heating fuel, etc). The family must also meet the eligibility guidelines identified above. The application process for this program will start January 2, 2001 and will be available in all Cherokee Nation Human Service Offices.
