TAHLEQUAH, OK - A new Cherokee Nation grant will help tribal youth raise funds for several different community activities throughout the year.“The Cherokee Nation has recognized that there are needs within the Cherokee community that fall beyond the scope of Cherokee Nation’s services,” said Roger Barr, Cherokee FIRST Volunteer Assistant. “We have had numerous requests from young tribal members asking for assistance for out of pocket travel expenses, membership fees and registration fees for softball tournaments, academic bowls, pow-wows and organized band events. These are the types of activities and expenses that the Community Youth Grant Program will address.”
The Community Youth Grant Program is administered through Cherokee FIRST. The grant requires that the tribal member or group requesting funds should be able to match the grant provided by the Cherokee Nation. Each request has a limit of $200.00 per individual or $500.00 per group.
The grant awards will be made based on the following set of established criteria: the activity must be consistent with Cherokee Nation mission and guiding principles, the activity must fall into one of the following categories, educational, athletic, extracurricular or cultural and the applicant must have documentation of Cherokee Nation tribal membership.
For information about the Community Youth Grant Program call the Cherokee FIRST office, phone: 918-456-0671 (ext.2937).
