Members of Sequoyah High School’s state runner-up girls basketball team at the Cherokee Nation, Oklahoma Tribal Council meeting.
TAHLEQUAH, OK - Principal Chief Chad Smith and the Cherokee Nation Tribal Council honored the Sequoyah High School girls basketball team and the SHS boys cross-country team during the regular Tribal Council meeting Monday night.

The SHS girls basketball team made it all the way to the state finals earlier this year and advanced to the state tournament for the second year in a row. The team’s starting center, Cherokee Nation tribal member Stevie Beartrack, was named to the all-state team.

The SHS boys cross-country team won three track meets this year, including the conference meet, and finished fifth in the state. The boys have been to the state meet 15 years in a row.

Don Crittenden, tribal council member from Cherokee County, and Smith congratulated the winning squads for their achievements and accomplishments. Smith also used the opportunity to note improved math test scores at Sequoyah over the past school year.
