TAHLEQUAH, OK - In preparation for the opening of a new exhibit, the Cherokee Heritage Center is holding a volunteer day this Saturday, April 21. The day's schedule will begin at 10:00 a.m. with a welcome and breakfast, followed by a tour of the Heritage Center's grounds and Ancient Village demonstrations. At noon, lunch will be provided and then volunteers will form work groups for grounds maintenance, amphitheater repairs or lye soap making.The Cherokee Heritage Center's volunteer program is managed by Elise White, who is a volunteer for Americorp's Volunteers In Service To America (VISTA). “Volunteering has been a life-enriching experience and we're trying to build a program at the museum that will be a similar enrichment experience for individuals in the community,” stated White.
The Cherokee Heritage Center is busy preparing for the opening of the Trail of Tears exhibit, which has been made possible by the National Park Service and Texaco.
Invitations have been sent to President George W. Bush, Vice President Chaney, Congressmen, the Oklahoma Legislature, tribal official and many other important dignitaries. “Our goal is to make the Cherokee Heritage Center shine for our special guests,” White added.
