TAHLEQUAH, OK - For the past 5 years, the Cherokee Nation Education Department has celebrated Cherokee Nation Education Month by planning and conducting several student competitions.The first competition was the Art Contest and was judged November 2 in the Council Chambers. There were over 200 entries from JOM students in grades K-12.
Other events scheduled for November are an oratory contest, a legal history class, language classes, a creative writing contest and the Cherokee Challenge Bowl.
The oratory contest will be held November 7 at 9 a.m. at the tribal complex. It is open to students in third through twelfth grade participants in the Johnson-O'Malley (JOM) Program.
The Cherokee legal history and language classes will be held November 8 at the Restaurant of the Cherokees.
The Cherokee Challenge Bowl for JOM students in third through fifth grade begins at 9 a.m. in the tribal council chambers on November 9, with registration beginning at 7:30. 6th through 8th graders will hold their Challenge Bowl on November 14, and 9th through 12th graders will compete on November 16. Children grades K-2 will have their challenge bowl on November 30.
The creative writing contest will be judged on November 17.
