TAHLEQUAH - Tribal leaders from throughout the state will meet at the University of Oklahoma on March 27 to discuss issues affecting tribes.Registration will open at 8 a.m. the day of the “Tribal Government Seminar” which will be held at the Oklahoma Memorial Union at OU. The Native American Studies Program at OU sponsors the seminar. It is open to the public, and tribal officials are encouraged to attend and participate.
Cherokee Nation Principal Chief Chad Smith will be one of the many speakers at the seminar. Others scheduled to speak are Chief of the Choctaw Nation Greg Pyle; Dean of the University of Oregon Law School, Rennard Strickland; Bill Rice, Tulsa University College of Law; Kirke Kickingbird, Oklahoma City University Law Center; and Mike Snyder, Director of Oklahoma Indian Legal Services Inc.
Topics will include rewriting tribal constitutions--case studies, issues and concerns of tribal governments, future development of tribal governments, major issues of tribal courts, tribal jurisdiction and the year 2000, and perpetuating tribal governance.
