Expected to Draw Thousands

TAHLEQUAH, OK — There are more than thirty events scheduled for this year’s Cherokee National Holiday. The event is hosted by the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma and will be held in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, September 1-3, 2000, Labor Day Week-end. Organizers expect as many as 100,000 people to attend this year’s Holiday. The theme of this year's Cherokee National Holiday is "A Family Reunion".

Featured events on Friday, September 1 include an afternoon stickball game, hog fry and the Gathering of the Grounds, and a traditional stomp dance. The Cherokee National Holiday parade is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, September 2, in downtown Tahlequah. Principal Chief Chad Smith will give his State of the Nation address at noon on September 2.

Other highlighted events for the Holiday include the Cherokee Holiday Run, an 8 kilometer competitive run and a 2-mile run/walk, special receptions for original enrollees and veterans, arts and crafts, a traditional Cornstalk Shoot, fishing, golf and softball tournaments as well as several children’s activities.
