TAHLEQUAH, OK - An anonymous donor said he'd rather help Cherokee children than give the money to Uncle Sam. That's why he gave $10,000 to the Cherokee Nation Educational Corporation (CNEC) earlier this month."The CNEC creates progressive learning opportunities and supports Cherokee students through scholarships," said Dr. Shelley Butler-Allen, associate education director for the Cherokee Nation. "This is our largest one-time gift, and the donor was kind enough to give us discretion over how the money will best educate Cherokee kids."
The CNEC is the first non-profit organization in the United States chartered under tribal law, and it serves to promote and preserve the language, culture and history of the Cherokee Nation.
For more information on the Cherokee Nation Educational Corporation, contact Margaret Peake Raymond, phone: 918-456-0671 (ext.2420) or send e-mail to: mraymond@cherokee.org. Donations may be mailed to the Cherokee Nation Educational Corporation at P.O. Box 948, Tahlequah, Oklahoma 74465.
