TAHLEQUAH, OK - The cold weather and windy conditions have made heat a very valuable commodity this winter. The Cherokee Nation is doing it’s best to help low income people keep warm this winter through it’s Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP).The Cherokee Nation Family Assistance Department is currently accepting applications for participation in the LIHEAP program. Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. from now through January 15, 2001. This program helps Indian households in the winter by paying assisting on payments on gas or electricity bills, or buying wood or propane for heating purposes.
To be eligible for LIHEAP through the Cherokee Nation, applicants must live within the jurisdictional boundaries of the Cherokee Nation, and the head of the household must be of Indian descent. Total income must not exceed the National Poverty Income Guidelines.
The LIHEAP Program also provides emergency assistance to those individuals that meet eligible requirements.
