TAHLEQUAH, OK - The Cherokee of Oklahoma (CNO) Nation Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program (BCCEDP) recently received an award for five years of funding from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDCP). Through a cooperative agreement with the CNO Health Services Division, the program will receive $530,576 for the first year of funding which is an increase of 35 percent over previous funding.The Cherokee Nation BCCEDP has been providing Indian women with comprehensive cancer services and education since 1994. In collaboration with 10 rural health clinics and Indian Health Service hospitals, the program provides breast and cervical cancer screening and diagnostic services, health education and outreach, and intensive tracking and follow-up through nurse case management.
The National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program is a CDCP-sponsored program that provides breast and cervical cancer screening, referral and follow-up services to low-income women who are uninsured or underinsured. The program is authorized by the Breast and Cervical Cancer Mortality Prevention Act of 1999 (Public Law 101-354).
