FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASETahlequah, Oklahoma
January 22nd, 1999On Saturday, January 30th, 1999 the Judicial Branch of the Cherokee Nation will host "Justice Ralph F. Keen Appreciation Day" at the Cherokee Nation Courthouse in downtown Tahlequah, Oklahoma. The event will be from 12:30 p.m. until 2:30 p.m.
The event will be in celebration of Justice Keen's thirty (30) plus years of continuing distinguished service to the people of the Cherokee Nation.
Keen's public service to the Cherokee people began in June, 1967, when then Chief W.W. Keeler, chose him to lead the tribe in its efforts to regain its rightful place in the world. Most recently Keen has served, and will continue to serve until his successor is installed, as a Justice of the Judicial Appeals Tribunal of the Cherokee Nation, which is the tribe's highest court.
Dwight W. Birdwell, Chief Justice of the high court stated, "Time and time again, Ralph has demonstrated his integrity, courage and high principles in the face of difficulty, turmoil and strife. It is only fitting that the Court, his friends, colleagues and the people, celebrate his accomplishments and thank him for his many years of service, which is continuing."
Birdwell added, "This is not a retirement party for Ralph. there is still much to be done as a member of the Tribunal. Ralph was an early supporter of the 1975 Cherokee Constitution, and among other things, he will be serving as a delegate to the upcoming Cherokee Constitutional Convention."
"Ralph is an honorable man, and an outstanding jurist. When in the future historians write the history of these times, Ralph Keen will be listed among the giants of the Cherokee people who supported good government, justice and decency through the rule of law. I feel confident that all who share in such beliefs will want to attend the celebration and say, "Thank You, Ralph for your past and continuing service to the Cherokee people," Birdwell stated.
The public is invited to attend the celebration.
