CPA Tahlequah - Tonight Channel 6 news reported that Wilma Mankiller, former Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma will be awarded the Medal of Freedom by President Clinton along with 13 other honorees in Washington, D.C. this month.

The medal being awarded to Mankiller is for her dedication and work on behalf of Indian people and Indian issues over her 10 years as Principal Chief. Mankiller has been a tireless leader traveling almost 90 percent of the year to speak on behalf of Indian people and issues during the 10 years as chief of the Cherokee Nation, and has continued that pace since.

Mankiller said that she would accept the medal, but that it belonged to all Indian people and was being accepted on behalf of all Indian people.

Many have said that they take pride in our Cherokee Nation leader Mankiller who has brought honor and national respect to our Nation.

Congratulations to Wilma P. Mankiller, Cherokee Nation Principal Chief for over 10 years.
