It may seem that I am bombarding you with a lot of information but take it and learn it small increments and you should be fine. In order to tell time you will have to be able to count to at least 29 using the Cherokee language, but I will give you all the tools in this lesson so that you will be able to tell time in Cherokee. In an earlier lesson I taught you how to ask, "What time is it?" You will also notice that the Cherokee word for hour contains the same word (i-yu-wa-ni-lv-hi) which refers to the striking sound many of the old clocks made when they rang out the time. Here are the terms you will need to tell time using the Cherokee language. What time is it? Or How many times has it struck? Hv-ga i-yu-wa-ni-lv-hi Formal Hv-ga i-yu-wa-ni-lv Conversational hour i-yu-wa-ni-lv-hi i-yu-wa-ni-lv minute i-ta-wo-s-ta-nv-hi i-ta-wo-s-ta-nv past hu-lo-sv-s-di hu-lo-sv-s-d till hu-da-lu-lv hu-da-lu-l Middle or center a-ye-hli a-ye-hl Note: In Cherokee they do not tell time using quarter after or a quarter till but they do use (a-ye-hli) to signify thirty. Here is a list from 1:00 o'clock to 12:00 o'clock. One o'clock or It has struck one time. So-gwo i-yu-wa-ni-lv-hi Two o'clock or It has struck two times. Ta-l i-yu-wa-ni-lv-hi Three o'clock or It has struck three times. Tso i-yu-wa-ni-lv-hi Four o'clock or It has struck four times. Nv-g i-yu-wa-ni-lv-hi Five o'clock or It has struck five times. Hi-s-g i-yu-wa-ni-lv-hi Six o'clock or It has struck six times. Su-da-l i-yu-wa-ni-lv-hi Seven o'clock or It has struck seven times.
