Smoke Signals DVD (1998)
Rated: PG Starring: Beach, Adams, et al. Author: Sherman Alexie Edition Details: NTSC format Color, Closed-captioned, Number of tapes: 1 ASIN: 6305210101 Review: basketw@humboldt1.com from Northern California , November 24, 1998 "Hilariously funny with a serious side about life. Smoke Signals shows Indian humor at its best. This film is just a small example of the everyday instances of growing up on a reservation without work and it really brings out the loyalty between the younger generation and their elders. Even though Smoke Signals will have you rolling with laughter, there is a strong message about love, honor, and life that is portrayed here. I recommend that everyone see this movie."
Dances With Wolves VHS (1990)
Dances With Wolves DVD
Review: Amazon.com essential video "Kevin Costner's 1990 epic won a bundle of Oscars for a moving, engrossing story of a white soldier (Costner) who singlehandedly mans a post in the 1870 Dakotas, and becomes a part of the Lakota Sioux community who live nearby. The film may not be a masterpiece, but it is far more than the sum of good intentions. The characters are strong, the development of relationships is both ambitious and careful, the love story between Costner and Mary McDonnell's character is captivating. Only the third-act portrait of white intruders as morons feels overbearing, but even that leads to a terribly moving conclusion. Costner's direction is assured, the balance of action and intimacy is perfect--what more could anyone want outside of an unqualified masterpiece? --Tom Keogh
Pow Wow Highway (1989)
ASIN: 6304360983, Color, NTSC Review: "Gary Farmer (Smoke Signals) is the standout in a fine film by Jonathan Wacks about an oversized Cheyenne man-child (Farmer) who decides to go on a spiritual quest, while simultaneously giving a ride to his lifelong Indian activist friend (A. Martinez). The film takes us through some pretty desolate Indian communities, but while Wacks makes a point of revealing harsher aspects of life on some reservations, the emphasis is on Farmer's delightful performance. A bonus: among the cast are Graham Greene (Dances with Wolves) and Wes Studi (The Last of the Mohicans), neither of whom were well-known in 1989, the year this film was released." --Tom Keogh, Amazon.com
Spirit - A Journey in Dance, Drums & Song (1998)
NTSC format, Color, Closed-captioned, ASIN: B00000ILF5 Review by Sam Sutherland, Amazon.com: "Weaving Native American mythology, music, dance, and rituals into a stage presentation augmented for television and home video, Spirit: A Journey in Dance, Drums, and Song suggests a New World counterpart to Riverdance, aimed at the same audience that made Bill Whelan's Celtic extravaganza a programming staple for PBS fund drives and a perennial seller in music and home video. ... Extensive use of montage allows natural symbols and scenes to be grafted over the stage-bound elements of the 75-minute performance. Ethnomusicologists may regard this as something of a pastiche, but that's probably the point--Spirit is designed as a romantic, pan-tribal evocation of the continent's pre-European culture and beliefs."

Reviews: From Leonard Maltin's Movie & Video Guide "John, Michael Grey Eyes, Tailinh Forest Flower, Kimberley Norris, Jimmy Herman, Ryan Black, Geno Silva, August Schellenberg. Not to be confused with the theatrical GERONIMO: AN AMERICAN LEGEND which premiered the same week, this was first in a series of Native American film projects from TNT. An alternately elegiac and violent look at the turbulent life of the Chiricahua Apaches and their fierce warrior-leader Geronimo. Even-handed approach toward historical accuracy and exploration of an often ignored American culture. Made for cable. 10m. added for video release." Copyright© Leonard Maltin, 1998.
