Cleveland, TN - The Annual Cherokee Days of Recognition are held the first week-end of August, at Red Clay State Historic Park. Activities begin at approximately 10:00 a.m. each day and conclude at approximately 5:00 p.m. Admission is free.Featured attractions include Cherokee traditional and fancy dancers, storytelling, living history demonstrations and more. The Annual Red Clay Open Blowgun Tournament is scheduled to be held on Sunday. Contestants compete for first, second and third place in the men’s, women’s and youth divisions. The overall points champion is awarded a special trophy.
Red Clay was the site of the Cherokee councils from
1832-1837, prior to the infamous Trail of Tears. While our modern educational systems are teaching history more accurately today, presenting past events from an American Indian perspective, our young people need to visit the sites of these events to better appreciate and understand the experiences of Indian People. Cherokee Days of Recognition seeks to educate the public about Cherokee culture, while also providing entertainment through Cherokee dance, storytelling, flute playing, etc. Cherokee Days of Recognition gives the public an opportunity to meet and talk with Cherokee people, gaining not only a respect for these people, but also a chance for new friendships.
During the two day event, Cherokee arts and crafts are demonstrated and sold. Cherokee fry bread, Indian tacos, other food items and soft drinks are available for purchase.
